Good morning, folks. We’ve got a handful of hints, but not quite yet a handful of answers regarding some of the important questions facing the 49ers front office this year. There’s been little news of OG Joshua Garnett following his reported physiological transformation - other than generic coachspeak praising his work ethic. It should be expected that he should challenge for a starting spot.
Jimmie Ward, a once promising (and personal favorite of this particular individual) defensive back, is far from guaranteed anything - in fact, he’s already largely treated in the media as a valuable ‘sixth man’ for the secondary, but faith seems to be slipping. As someone who has been faithfully pro-Ward, my sincerest hopes are that he can make Williams redundant, and allow his abilities to shine on both defense and special teams.
However, perhaps the most controversial item is the position that Arik Armstead will play. Many of us have unpleasant memories about the yo-yo action of Cornelius Carradine - a talented defensive lineman who changed his body multiple times to plug a round peg into a round hole, and vice versa. It seems that the “Armstead to LEO” project is over, as he’s reporting healthily at #290, seemingly a candidate for the Big End role.
It’s currently something of an uncomfortable position that we’re in - we have crumbs with which to bicker, but nothing concrete enough that we can debate over.
