The team had their 1st day of mandatory minicamp on Tuesday. The biggest news of the day revolves around Richard Sherman. Richard, who has not been on the field since tearing his Achilles in November as a member of the Seattle Seahawks, participated in individual drills. The 49ers are hoping he can return to his normal form, which made him one of the best corners in the NFL. He spoke after practice and said that he felt the best he’s felt in a long time. The extended time off hopefully helped him recover properly. The 49ers defense needs him to lead a young defense up to its potential.
Three of the 49ers rookies could have big impacts this coming season. First round pick Mike McGlinchey will likely start immediately and he is expected to protect Jimmy Garoppolo. But two others could see quite a bit of time on the field. Fred Warner split first team reps with veteran Malcolm Smith. While Smith is the favorite to start alongside Reuben Foster, the coaching staff seems to be comfortable with Fred on the field. He called plays for the defense, which shows the trust they have in his ability. On offense, Dante Pettis reportedly had his best practice of the offseason with Marquise Goodwin and Trent Taylor out with injuries. The 49ers think very highly of him since they took him in the 2nd round of the draft. With Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin as the starters, Dante could definitely compete for playing time this season with the other receivers on the roster.
On the injury front, Malcolm Smith came back from an injury that kept him out last week. Fellow linebacker Brock Coyle is still out after having shoulder surgery. Jimmy Ward is still dealing with an ankle injury. On offense, Marquise Goodwin is out, but his injury reportedly will not keep him out long. Trent Taylor had a procedure to remove bone spurs out of his back and is expected back by the time training camp comes around.
