Report: J.J. Wilcox “flips”, off to sign with New York Jets

So much for that idea...

Reports came out this morning that the San Francisco 49ers would sign safety J.J. Wilcox. The addition came after the team waived Trovon Reed on Monday.

Not so fast.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that Wilcox has “flipped” and left Santa Clara without signing a contract. Instead, he’s heading to New Jersey to sign with the New York Jets.

Well, so much for that idea.

As to what happened with the 49ers in that office we may never know, but it looks like at the very last second, Wilcox decided he didn’t want to play for Kyle Shanahan and Robert Saleh by extension. I’m sure a reason will be coming out as this may be a question asked in a press conference.

Then again, like Shefter said, he could just flip again and have a hard time making up his mind on where to go.

As it stands, the 49ers have themselves an open roster spot if Wilcox decides to follow through with this and sign with the Jets. Would they bring back Reed? I don’t know, but this is certainly bizarre.
