Good morning folks! As I’m sure that you’re aware, the 49ers begin training camp practices today. It’s been a long month and a half since minicamp concluded, but thankfully we’ll now have some proverbial fat on which to chew as we inch closer to “real football”. Hopefully, this will also mark the end of tabloid journalism masquerading as football news, and a breakneck decline in offseason deadzone filler. Once we get past the upcoming onslaught of “projecting the 49ers week one roster” articles, it’ll be smooth sailing.
The team was busy yesterday, signing a total of three new players (and three corresponding cuts), including two defensive linemen, as well as a familiar face along the offensive line. Both defensive linemen, Cedric Thornton and Will Sutton, have starting experience around the NFL, but likely face an uphill battle in making the roster with the current glut of talent along the defensive line. Furthermore, wide receiver Dante Pettis signed his rookie contract, being the last to do so, but sparing us a Michael Crabtree repeat in the process.
More importantly, however, was the release of the list of players slated to start training camp on the PUP/NFI, which included a mixed bag of surprises. After last week’s furor over Richard Sherman being spotted with a limp, he’s been medically cleared for all activities, but former (and current) teammate Malcolm Smith and second-year receiver Trent Taylor were among those listed as injured. Dekoda Watson rounds out the PUP group. Thankfully, it’s thought that these designations are precautionary, allowing them to catch up on conditioning after being cleared from previous injuries.
The 49ers first preseason game will be in two weeks, on Thursday, August 9th. They will be at home against the Cowboys.
