The 49ers have done an impressive revamping of their roster since John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan took over from the previous regime. But one player that continues to shine is a holdover from the previous regime. DeForest Buckner has been a consistent player on the 49ers’ defensive line. He is one of the top defensive linemen in the league and could push for defensive player of the year consideration if he continues to develop. In training camp on Tuesday, he had 2 sacks and was putting constant pressure in the pocket. The coaching staff expects him to dominate whatever offensive line he faces this season, so they need the rest of the defense to do their part.

DeForest’s current teammate and former Oregon teammate Arik Armstead suffered another injury and could be out for awhile. Arik suffered a hamstring injury and could be out a few weeks in training camp. His availability will be on a week to week basis. Arik has had a rough time staying healthy since he was drafted in 2015. He has played in a total of 14 games the last 2 season. This is a big season for Arik and hopefully he is able to come back and play well. He is slated to be the starter at defensive end.

The team did get 5 players back from injury lists. WR Trent Taylor, G Jonathan Cooper, S Marcell Harris, and linebackers Dekoda Watson and Malcolm Smith are cleared to resume practice. Trent is projected to have a significant part in the offense. Jimmy Garoppolo and Kyle Shanahan will be glad to have him back in the fold. Malcolm Smith’s return helps with the suspension of Reuben Foster to begin the season.
