Disappointing news out of Houston. The San Francisco 49ers have played rookie safety Terrell Williams on injured reserve following a knee injury suffered at Thursday’s joint practice with the Texans. The 49ers have signed veteran safety Dexter McCoil to replace Williams.
Although Williams was at the back end of the depth chart, he put together a solid debut last week against the Cowboys. He suffered the knee injury during one-on-one drills, but was walking around and told Matt Maiocco he was doing fine. So much for that.
His roster chances were not great, but there are enough questions at the safety position that he might have had a shot. By placing Williams on IR now, they officially end his season. If a player gets hurt but the team thinks he can return during the season, they can use the return designation only if the player is added to IR after final roster cuts.
McCoil played for the 49ers last season after being claimed off waivers in October. He appeared in eight games and was waived on April 30th of this year. He knows the defense and can slot in easily to provide some camp depth.
