The 49ers are gearing up for practice Thursday and we have a new name to add to the injury list. Jimmy Ward and Joshua Garnett are both day-to-day, however linebacker Fred Warner has been added to the non-contact list.
Eric Branch reports that the issue is with Warner’s chest, so I’m sure there will be a question about the extent of the injury at Kyle Shanahan’s press conference. Given that Malcom Smith has a veterans day off, this will give some chances to some other linebackers down on the depth chart like Korey Toomer to move up a tier in practice.
While Ward’s status seems like something expected, Garnett’s injury is interesting because in Kyle Shanahan’s Wednesday press conference, he indicated he was a bit surprised Garnett couldn’t practice on Wednesday and said he would, “be more surprised if he wasn’t out there tomorrow [Thursday].” The extent of Garnett’s injury is something to watch and see if there’s something larger going on given the extended absence.
Beyond injuries it is a veterans day for some players, so Joe Staley, Jerick McKinnon, Pierre Garçon, DeForest Buckner, Earl Mitchell, Richard Sherman, and Malcolm Smith all have the day off.
