Jeremy McNichols is your Week 2 workhorse running back

The 49ers preseason snap count usually reveals some interesting tidbits. We’ve got the full look on both sides of the ball following the Texans game.

The San Francisco 49ers wrapped up their second game of the preseason this past weekend, and we’re back with the snap count! Contain your excitement. I’ve posted the full snap count below, but feel free to check out the game book PDF.

As expected, we saw a little bit more of the starters, although not a crazy amount for a lot of them. A week ago, Jimmy Garoppolo and many of the offensive starters played nine snaps or less. This week, Garoppolo and the bulk of his offensive line got 23 snaps. Mike Person played a little longer as the team continues to take an extended look at him. Joshua Garnett and Jonathan Cooper both got their first game action as well.

In the first preseason game, rookie lineman Jullian Taylor started and played 32 snaps, and was in the game all four quarters. This week, he started again, but only played 13 snaps. That was two fewer than the bulk of the starters, but given he is not a regular in the sub-packages, that makes sense. But he was treated a bit more like a starter this week, which is intriguing while Arik Armstead remains sidelined. Sheldon Day got a sizable workload, and appears to be earning a key rotational spot on the defensive interior.

Running back Jeremy McNichols was the work-horse back this week, thanks in part to Joe William suffering his injury. Alfred Morris ended up not playing on Saturday, while rookie Jeff Wilson got 11 snaps on the day. McNichols started at running back, and we saw him fairly regularly during the game. With Williams now joining Jerick McKinnon and Matt Breida on the sideline the rest of the preseason, I would not be surprised to see Morris getting a sizable workload this Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Does anything in particular stand out for you in the Week 2 snap count?
