Fooch’s update: The team announced on Wednesday that they have waived/injured McCaffrey. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve. The team could either leave him their all season, or figure out an injury settlement.
The San Francisco 49ers are likely moving wide receiver Max McCaffrey to the injured reserve list before final cuts on Saturday. McCaffrey has not played in any of the team’s preseason games, and it would appear to be due to a foot fracture. McCaffrey posted an Instagram story on his account, and beat writer Cam Inman spotted it.
If you can’t see Inman’s caption, it refers to an “apparent Jones fracture surgery.”
Here’s to a strong recovery for WR @maxmccaffrey87 from apparent Jones fracture surgery. I’d expect #49ers put him on IR this week. He’s the oldest of the McCaffrey brothers and joined 49ers in December. I said at start of camp his build reminded me of Kyle Shanahan and hoped coach would prank team by suiting up in his No. 1 jersey. Max hustled and made some nice catches in camp.
The 49ers signed McCaffrey last December when they placed Victor Bolden on injured reserve. McCaffrey was on the 53-man roster for the final three games of the season, inactive for all three. He was a longshot to make the roster, but if this is a season-long surgery, he’ll get to stay on the injured reserve list. He won’t practice, but he’ll have the option to rehab with team trainers and attend team meetings. He is signed through the end of this season.
