49ers waived/injured WR Max McCaffrey

New, comments

Already injured, it was a longshot of him making the team even if healthy.

There’s been some football news on Wednesday and the San Francisco 49ers are getting into it announcing they have waived/injured wide receiver Max McCaffrey. McCaffrey was picked up in December of 2017 off the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad and was seen as a longshot to make the 2018 team in the early preparations of training camp thanks to the 49ers now-deep wide receiver group. After suffering a foot fracture, it was all but certain something his days were numbered.

McCaffrey will now be going through the waiver process. If he clears waivers he reverts to injured reserve where he either can remain all season, or the team can figure out an injury settlement.

Given how he’s bounced around the league and the 49ers have wide receiver depth, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was the latter. McCaffrey had signed a two-year contract so the 49ers may want to just clear the books and reach a settlement.
