Fooch’s update, 12:41 p.m.: Joe Williams is getting waived, according to NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero. He was dealing with a rib injury, but Pelissero said he is healthy now.
Fooch’s update, 7:16 a.m., 8/31: Matt Maiocco is reporting Erik Magnuson could be available sooner than the 6-to-8 week time frame previously projected, and suggests this does not bode well for Jonathan Cooper. Additionally, Maiocco is reporting that he has “come to believe the 49ers will keep Marcell Harris on the initial 53-man roster. Maybe they want to place him on IR with a chance to return him this season.
The San Francisco 49ers closed out their preseason Thursday, and NFL roster cut weekend has officially arrived. The 49ers and all 31 other teams have until 1:00 p.m. PT on Saturday to cut down from 90 to 53 players. It used to be a cut from 90 to 75 players by Tuesday, then 75 to 53 by Saturday, but the league changed that policy. This means potentially over 1,100 players will hit the market this weekend. Teams will claim some of them, and another 320 will eventually end up on practice squads. You can find more cuts from other teams around the NFL at SB Nation.
The 49ers have to make all their cuts by Saturday, August 1 at 1 p.m., but Kyle Shanahan said they will make a sizable chunk of them by the end of Friday. The team has some they already know they will be making, and Shanahan said the team is not going to make players wait if the decision has already been made. However, he acknowledged that some will come down to the wire on Saturday.
After roster cuts, vested veterans immediately hit the market, while players with less than four accrued seasons will go through the waivers process on Sunday at 9 a.m. PT. Roster cuts are never really “final” roster cuts since a team might see someone worth claiming off waivers or signing as a free agent. Additionally, if the 49ers have players they want to move to injured reserve with the option of bringing them back this season, those moves will likely happen on Sunday. Finally, they will sign a 10-man practice squad starting Sunday at 10 a.m., as well as scouring the NFL waiver wire as other players are released over the weekend.
