The 49ers opened up their third week of training camp and it seemed to be smoother than the day before the team’s day off. There were still several players out due to bumps and bruises so a few players had their chance to move up a spot and get more reps. Richard Sherman’s hamstring is more severe than previously thought, Kyle Shanahan reported it was a grade one strain.
Other players that sat out or had limited reps were: Joshua Garnett, Brock Coyle, Fred Warner, Trent Taylor, J.P. Flynn, Cole Wick, Cole Hikutini. C.J. Beathard returned from Canton where he saw his grandfather enshrined in the ProFootball Hall Of Fame at about the start of 11-on-11s and get some reps in after warming up.
Here are your best plays of the day 8/5
Tartt pops up
The connection between Jimmy Garoppolo and George Kittle has been on display continuously this training camp but Jaquiski Tartt jumped the route and got his hand in for a PBU during 11-on-11s. The pass was five yards out to the right hash mark, which has been the sweet spot for the pair. Tartt saw what was coming and denied the completion.
Quietly making himself known
With the depth at wide receiver being what it is, it’s going to be a tough competition and reps are very important. Richie James Jr. has been doing a good job at making the most of them and quietly getting noticed. With Beathard out of the beginning of team drills, James worked with Jack Heneghan who caught James with a dart of a pass in stride for a completion as he crossed from right to left.
Witherspoon gets his man
Marquise Goodwin has also been a reliable target for Garoppolo and the defensive backs have been challenged by Goodwin’s out right speed. Ahkello Witherspoon read this play and got his hand in to break up the pass that looked like it would have been an easy gain for the offense.
Garoppolo touching down
During red zone drills Garoppolo connected with Garrett Celek and Pierre Garcon for touchdowns. Both plays were into tight coverage and after Garoppolo went through his reads. Celek was being covered by Tartt and Garçon was being covered in the middle by Mark Nzeocha.
Pick city
During 11-on-11s the defensive backs got after it. Tyvis Powell intercepted a Beathard throw that was intended for George Kittle. Tarvarius Moore intercepted a Nick Mullens pass intended for Ross Dwelley. In red zone drills Elijah Lee tipped a Mullens pass right into the hands of Eli Harold who held on for the interception. D.J. Reed snagged a Heneghan pass intended for Richie James during one on ones.
The long bomb
At the end of team drills Garoppolo hit a wide open Kendrick Bourne for a 20 yard completion. Malcolm Smith was the closest defender in the vicinity. Needless to say, Bourne ran it out to add another 40 yards to the play.
