K’Waun Williams to miss rest of week’s practices, hopes to return next week

This could open up a big opportunity for rookie defensive back D.J. Reed.

The San Francisco 49ers released an injury report at the start of their Monday, August 6th practice, and the big addition is cornerback K’Waun Williams. The team’s nickel back suffered an ankle injury on Sunday, and he will miss the rest of the week. He joins J.P. Flynn, Richard Sherman, and Joshua Garnett in resting this week and looking for progress next week.

Jennifer Chan posted the full injury report. The only other addition is center Weston Richburg, who is having a rest day.

Armstead, Sherman, Garnett, and Williams are all potential starters who will miss Thursday’s preseason opener against the Dallas Cowboys. A lot of starters will likely not play in that game, but this could open the door for even more opportunities for reserve players.

The big beneficiary of Williams’ injury is rookie D.J. Reed. The team is focusing Jimmie Ward on outside cornerback duties, so Reed is likely going to get a ton of slot work on Thursday. The starting nickel cornerbacks are likely to be Ward and Ahkello Witherspoon on the outside, with Reed on the inside. Others will get opportunities, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Reed was in the slot the entire first half.
