The San Francisco 49ers host their preseason opener on Thursday against the Dallas Cowboys, and head coach Kyle Shanahan announced the team’s starters will get some playing time.
The starters on both sides of the ball, including Jimmy Garoppolo, will get one series. Anything beyond that for veterans will depend on how the first series goes. If the series is three and out, they might see more time. I say veterans because a rookie like Mike McGlinchey will likely get some additional snaps with the second team line.
Jonathan Cooper will not play on Thursday. He has been back at practice, but it has still been two snaps and then rest. With Joshua Garnett sidelined this week, that means Mike Person will get the start. Jimmie Ward will play as well, having gotten two full practices after missing some time. He will start in place of Richard Sherman, who is out the rest of the week with a hamstring injury.
