The 49ers kickoff their 2018 preseason against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday. Kyle Shanahan confirmed that Jimmy Garoppolo will play on Thursday. He didn’t say how long into the game he will go, but it’s likely he will not play more than a series or 2. If the opening series goes well, it will probably be his only series. Game 2 and 3 are the games that the starters will get the most work.
There’s a fairly decent list that will miss the Cowboy game. Richard Sherman, Joshua Garnett, Arik Armstead, K’Waun Williams, and Jonathan Cooper have all been ruled out for the 1st game. Jimmie Ward will play in place of Richard Sherman. With Joshua and Jonathan out, the right guard position will be manned by Mike Person and Erik Magnuson.
One guy that is really excited to make to play Thursday is LB Malcolm Smith. He missed all of last season after an injury in training camp and is anxious to get back on the field to help this defense. He is the frontrunner to play alongside Reuben Foster this season and the 49ers hope he takes the play calling load off of Reuben.
