Fooch’s update: The line continues to grow. The line has climbed as high as seven points, with most sportsbooks between six and 6.5 points. Plenty of money coming in on the 49ers.
24 hours ago, the San Francisco 49ers were sitting as a field goal favorite for their Week 2 matchup against the Detroit Lions. I figured a strong Monday Night Football performance might bring the line down a little. Turns out a strong MNF performance made a difference, just not like many of us expected. The 49ers are now 5.5 point favorites, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.
The New York Jets pounded the Lions, and the game also resulted in a host of injuries for Detroit. Cornerback Darius Slay left with a head injury but returned, edge rusher Ezekiel Ansah left with a shoulder injury and did not return, and quarterback Matthew suffered a knee injury but continued, and later suffered a rib injury that cost him a few snaps.
Slay and Stafford seem likely to play in Week 2, but Ansah is a serious question mark for the matchup. Public money was coming in on the 49ers at a field goal, but it will be worth tracking how the money moves with the line climbing. The line is moved to even out the money coming in so the sportsbook can be in line to profit regardless of who wins. After the Lions Monday night meltdown, sportsbooks have their work cut out for them.
