Fooch’s update: Kyle Shanahan announced that Brock Coyle suffered a C4 compression fracture in his back. The earliest he could be cleared for contact is six weeks.
The San Francisco 49ers announced some transactions Wednesday afternoon. The team has placed linebacker Brock Coyle on injured reserve and signed linebacker Terence Garvin. Additionally, they promoted offensive lineman Najee Toran from the practice squad and signed WR Frank Stephens to the practice squad. The 49ers had one open roster spot on the 53-man roster after placing Dekoda Watson on injured reserve last weekend.
The Coyle news is of note given his injury. He was placed in the concussion protocol after suffering a head injury in Week 1. He can return from IR, having been placed on it after final cuts, but this suggests a particularly concerning concussion. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will meet with the media at 12:25 p.m. and should have an update at that point.
Garvin can play both inside and outside linebacker, and offers some depth for a depleted group. Elijah Lee was next man up after Coyle’s concussion, but the rotation next to Fred Warner is not yet clear.
Toran’s promotion suggests Joshua Garnett and/or Mike Person’s foot injuries might cost them this week. The 49ers will issue a practice participation report Wednesday afternoon which will give us a better handle on things.
Shanahan will meet with the media at 12:25 p.m. PT, and the 49ers will stream the press conferences Twitter, Facebook, and the team’s app. The 49ers beat writers will also have updates from the media sessions. I’ve embedded our beat writer Twitter list so you can follow along. We’ll have a transcript later today.
