Good morning folks, the second week of the 2018 NFL season kicks off tonight with a divisional matchup between the Ravens and the Bengals. Both teams are coming off week 1 victories that showcased their offensive abilities, but, as usual, the Ravens’ defense seems to have the edge after a stifling performance against the Bills. How much of that was due to the Bills’ ineptitude on offense is yet to be seen, but Baltimore’s ability to harass the quarterback looks to be impressive.
As for the 49ers, injury woes have highlighted the week thus far. After reverting to the 49ers’ injured reserve list as part of final cuts, Aaron Burbridge has been officially released by the 49ers with an injury settlement. The veteran wide receiver and special teams contributor is now a free agent, and, unfortunately, I can’t imagine his prospects are too great as of this moment. Speaking of IR, linebacker Brock Coyle has been added to the list following a week 1 impact that left him with a concussion and a broken bone in his back.
The team made a corresponding roster move by signing journeyman veteran Terence Garvin, who made three starts last year with the Seattle Seahawks at the linebacker position. Over his previous 5 years in the league, he’s seen a fair amount of special teams work, but a relatively small amount of actual defensive work - however, he does have experience as an inside and outside linebacker, which seems to create some value to having him on the roster, as the entire OLB depth chart is currently Mark Nzeocha.
Guards Mike Person and Joshua Garnett continue to sit out with foot injuries, which means, to me, that there may be an outside chance that Najee Toran, an undrafted rookie who was called up from the practice squad this week, may see some game action against the Lions. Malcolm Smith continues to sit out with an injury he sustained early in the preseason - continuing his streak of not producing anything for the 49ers.
On the perimeters, Adrian Colbert sat Wednesday’s practice out with a hamstring issue, and fellow defenders Jaquiski Tartt, K’Waun Williams, and Ahkello Witherspoon were all listed as “limited” with various ailments. Speedster Marquise Goodwin has continued to sit with a thigh injury, and his availability for Sunday’s home game against the Lions is looking less and less likely.
