The San Francisco 49ers got their first win of the season. And unlike last season, it happened long before November!
The 49ers beat the Detroit Lions 30-27, just barely holding them off in the fourth quarter. The Lions stormed back with a pair of touchdowns, almost had a pick six, and had the ball in the final minute with some momentum on their side. Mistakes cost them however, and the 49ers walked away the victors.
After the game, Richard Sherman said, “A win is a win, but it feels like a loss.” The secondary had plenty of struggles, and benefited from Matthew Stafford overthrowing several open receivers. It is not surprising the team would think the game does not quite feel like a normal victory.
The 49ers have plenty to work on this as they prepare for Week 3 against the high flying Kansas City Chiefs. And yet, a win is a win is a win.
Sherman also talked after the game about Ahkello Witherspoon’s struggles, and that he had 24 hours to deal with it and then forget about it. Cornerbacks need to have short memories, and the same holds true for the team as a whole. You can never get too high after a win (unless it’s the Super Bowl!) or too low after a loss (unless it’s the Super Bowl :().
But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the win for tonight. The 49ers are making no bones about their performance. They know they have to improve. But hey, a victory Monday sounds good to me, and that makes today a good day!
