49ers move Jerick McKinnon to injured reserve, sign safety, offensive lineman

New, comments

The 49ers have added some depth on the offensive line and in the secondary.

The San Francisco 49ers announced two additions to the roster on Monday. The team signed safety Antone Exum and offensive lineman Matt Tobin to one-year contracts. To make room for them, the 49ers placed safety Marcell Harris and running back Jerick McKinnon on injured reserve. They also announced the signing of offensive lineman Zack Golditch to the practice squad.

Harris did not take part in any preseason games, continuing his rehab from an Achilles tear suffered a year ago. By placing Harris on injured reserve now, the 49ers can bring him back later this season if they are so inclined. D.J. Reed serves as the team’s backup free safety, and Exum will be the backup strong safety.

Tobin plays tackle, and likely will serve as an emergency lineman if Garry Gilliam remains in the concussion protocol. The team traded a seventh round pick for Shon Coleman, so the Tobin addition suggests Gilliam will not be available this weekend against the Minnesota Vikings.
