The San Francisco 49ers were already short-handed in Week 4 with Jimmy Garoppolo lost last for the season last week with a torn ACL. On Sunday, backup quarterback C.J. Beathard lost some key cogs during the game. Left tackle Joe Staley suffered a knee injury in the second quarter and was ruled out after the game following halftime. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey also suffered a knee injury, and has been listed as questionable to return. Garry Gilliam and Erik Magnuson are in at left and right tackle, respectively.
The 49ers also lost Dante Pettis to a knee injury, but losing both tackles is a huge problem. The offense was moving the ball fairly well through the first half, but losing both tackles is going to lead to serious problems in both the pass and run game. The 49ers had done solid work keeping their quarterback upright, but it should surprise nobody that Beathard was sacked early in the third quarter. It might be a long afternoon now for Beathard.
The 49ers and Chargers were tied 17-17 at the half, and after a three-and-out, the 49ers have punted to the Chargers. If the 49ers are going to spring an upset, they desperately need their defense to step up.
