The San Francisco 49ers have had some issues with depth for linebackers and now it’s just gotten worse. The team has announced they have placed linebacker Dekoda Watson on injured reserve.
Watson was listed on the injury report as out for Week 1 and had a normal week of practice until Friday. Apparently the injury was much worse than expected because of him being placed on IR. This makes the linebackers take yet another hit. Watson played more on the outside, as a reserve for the LEO role, but he had some versatility as an emergency SAM. Outside of his linebacker play, Watson was a productive player on special teams as well.
The 49ers need to get some depth and quick. Ronald Blair has been mentioned as the team’s Swiss Army knife and he may be getting plenty of work now with all the injuries coming up on the defensive side of the ball. It also may mean an extended look at practice squad player Pita Taumoepenu is in order to fill the void.
