49ers did in fact give Broncos permission to interview QB coach Rich Scangarello

The 49ers might need themselves a new QB coach.

After a Friday of conflicting reports, Monday has brought some clarity on San Francisco 49ers quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello. He will interview with the Denver Broncos Monday afternoon for their vacant offensive coordinator job, per Les Shapiro and Mike Klis.

Late last week, we had a couple different reports on Scangarello. NFL Network reporter Tom Pelissero said the Broncos were going to interview Scangarello on Monday, but then Adam Schefter reported the 49ers had turned down the Broncos request. Shapiro, a Denver radio host, had maintained the interview was still expected to happen, and Klis confirmed the Monday timeline.

The Broncos were hoping Gary Kubiak would take over the role, but it sounds like there were some disagreements. Kubiak was then expected to stick with his personnel side role, but he is now interviewing with other teams for OC roles.

Shortly after the Scangarello news, Klis reported the Broncos had agreed to terms with Mike Munchak to join the team as offensive line coach. Shapiro thinks Munchak will probably make more than Scangarello would get given the experience level. One has to wonder how egos would work in that room if Scangarello ends up getting the job.

If Scangarello lands the job, the next question is what the 49ers would do to replace him on the coaching staff. They don’t appear to have someone internally to promote into the role. There could be a host of names on Shanahan’s radar, but I would not be surprised if they brought in a quarterback Shanahan was familiar with that is looking to get into coaching.

For example, Matt Simms is a guy who has bounced around the NFL, likely thanks to his last name. The 49ers actually brought him in for a workout after Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt. He is now signed with an AAFL team starting play in February. If he’s looking to get into coaching, maybe that happens. Who knows, maybe it’s somebody else from the list in that link.
