Earlier this week, San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle opened the recruiting effort of Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown. Odds are probably not great that Brown gets traded to the 49ers, but crazy things happen, so props to Kittle for working that angle.
Meanwhile, 49ers receiver Marquise Goodwin had a chance to recruit a slightly more realistic target. Goodwin was in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, taking in his Texas Longhorns’ upset of the fifth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Attending the game with Goodwin was fellow Longhorn alum and soon to be free agent safety Earl Thomas. This picture is from Goodwin’s Instagram story on Tuesday.

The 49ers have several options to start at their free safety position between Adrian Colbert, Jaquiski Tartt, D.J. Reed, and Antone Exum. There is potential there, but Thomas would be an instant upgrade to the position. I’m mostly curious how they view Colbert in this. Reed seems best suited for the nickel back role, while Tartt could end up competing with Colbert and others at free safety, and then with Marcell Harris at strong safety.
You can never have enough depth in the NFL, but at some point some hard decisions need to be made. How the 49ers approach the safety position this offseason could be a big story this offseason.
