He now has the same title as Adam Peters.

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch announced on Thursday that the organization has made a move in the personnel department. Senior personnel executive Martin Mayhew as been promoted to the role of Vice President of Player Personnel. It’s the same job title as Adam Peters, but Lynch said they have different responsibilities.

Lynch did not get into specifics of the roles, but according to Jennifer Chan Peters’ focus will be pro personnel and Mayhew’s focus will be on the college scouting side. Given Mayhew’s extensive experience across the board, I imagine he can still serve as a sounding board on pro matters. He was the Detroit Lions’ general manager for seven years and spent a season working in salary cap compliance and contract negotiations with the New York Giants. He was a teammate of Lynch in Tampa Bay the first four seasons of the latter’s career.

It could just be a formality thing, but Peters has been viewed as a riser who would eventually get a chance to run his own shop. It’s possible this is preparation for that kind of move, but his future will probably be tied at least a little bit to if the 49ers find some success in 2019.

Rob Lowder summed it up well, and if you don’t know the quotation, give this a watch.
