Report: 49ers hiring Shane Day for QB coach position

Atlanta Falcons v Chicago Bears

The San Francisco 49ers are hiring Shane Day to take over as quarterbacks coach, according to Matt Maiocco. Day will replace Rich Scangarello, who joined Vic Fangio’s coaching staff in Denver as offensive coordinator.

Day spent the past three seasons as tight ends coach with the Miami Dolphins. He spent the previous two seasons as assistant offensive line coach in Washington. He does have quarterback coaching experience, having spent the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Chicago Bears in that role, and then the 2012 and 2013 season with the University of Connecticut.

Day has prior experience with the 49ers. He served as offensive quality control coach from 2007 to 2009. He worked with the quarterbacks in 2007, the running backs in 2008, and the offensive line in 2009.

There had been some talk wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator Mike LaFleur or run-game coordinator Mike McDaniel might transition to the quarterbacks role. LaFleur spent Senior Bowl week working with the quarterbacks, and both coaches split play-calling duties. They will seemingly continue with their 2018 roles.
