Golden Nuggets: Is Shanahan finally hitting his stride?

When Kyle Shanahan took over as the head coach of the 49ers in February of 2017, he had already established himself as a premier play caller and offensive coordinator in the NFL. Having been successful in that capacity with the Texans, the Redskins, the Falcons, and even the Browns, the expectation was that he would hit the ground running in San Francisco.

Unfortunately for Niners fans, that wasn’t the case. He struggled out of the gate, largely due to lack of talent on the roster and an inexperienced defensive coordinator and GM.

But Shanahan himself has had his ups and downs as a head coach, with game management, personnel decisions, and even with play calling which is his area of expertise. To be fair, his early struggles were understandable. It’s one thing to manage an offense and call plays in game when that is your only responsibility. But add in the challenge of managing all aspects of the game and it can be a bit overwhelming.

Luckily for 49ers fans, Shanahan seems to have finally pulled it all together in 2019, as evidenced by his predicting George Kittle’s TD pre-snap based solely on Cleveland’s defensive formation on Monday night, which prompted Joe Staley to say of his HC, “What a bada$$!!”

What a bada$$ indeed. And after two long years, this bada$$ is finally hitting his stride.
