The 49ers have released WR Malik Henry to make room for Burnett on the practice squad.

Per Tom Pelissero, the 49ers have signed wide receiver Deontay Burnett to the practice squad. The team worked out other receivers on Tuesday as well, including former Ravens Jordan Lasley and Jaylen Smith.

Burnett(6’0, 186 pounds), was an undrafted free agent out of USC. He signed with the Titans and spent time with the Jets during the preseason as well. During the preseason, Burnett caught 12 of his 14 targets for 92 yards and a touchdown with the Jets. The report on Burnett coming out of college was that he was skinny, and if a defender got his hands on him, that the route was over. He weighed 186 pounds at the combine, but that dropped to 177 pounds at USC’s Pro Day. Burnett had below-average jumps in the vertical at 30.5”, and 10-feet-1 in the broad jump. He ran a 4.70 40-yard dash, where he was said to be at 80% health.

Yesterday, Kyle Shanahan mentioned that Deebo Samuel would be questionable this week. I wonder if this signing has anything to do with Samuel’s groin strain is related to this. The 49ers can afford to be cautious with Deebo, as they play Washington this upcoming week. They can activate Jordan Matthews, and use Richie James Jr. more. We’ll know more as the week goes on, but Burnett is on the practice squad.
