I spent a lot of time during the past offseason quoting articles and using PFF stats to defend Arik Armstead. It did not seem to matter what he did last season, people just looked at his sack count and repeated the same mantra about how he was a mediocre defensive player and a draft bust. Most people thought I was crazy when I kept repeating that we should try to sign him to a multiyear contract. I felt like, if we wanted a team friendly contract, it was the right time to get it done.
It is amazing how quick things can change. Now I am the one saying we might not be able to afford to keep him and the same people that thought I was crazy for wanting him to sign a multiyear contract during the offseason think I am a jerk for suggesting we might not be able to afford him.
Not only am I a jerk for thinking we might not be able to afford to keep Armstead, I am also a jerk for thinking the 49ers need to keep proving themselves on the field. This is not college football. Ratings after weeks six mean nothing. The only thing that means anything is winning this week. Yes, our defensive line is ridiculously good, Breida has been amazing and Kittle is everyone’s favorite player on and off the field. I love this team and can’t get enough but, I feel like it is still too early to gloat.
Ok, ok, once we beat the living tar out of Seattle I will be gloating with everyone else. When we embarrass Green Bay and New Orleans, I will be talking as much smack as anyone but I need us to play the games first.
