The San Francisco 49ers beat Washington on Sunday while scoring nine points. There are a few ways to react to a 9-0 victory. You can overreact and think the offense is in trouble, despite their proficiency in the first five games. The way to slow down a Kyle Shanahan led offense is to load the box and hope it’s a monsoon outside, so there’s no chance his play-action passing game will work. There it is. Washington solved the Da Vinci Code.

You can also acknowledge the fact that the Niners’ defense has now allowed ten points in 12 quarters of football. You don’t fake that. The Buffalo Bills were thought to be one of the better defenses in the NFL, and they almost gave up 400 yards of offense to the winless Dolphins on Sunday. If not for two turnovers, they may lose that game. If Buffalo and San Francisco make the playoffs, nobody will look back to October 20th and point to each team’s close victory.

The measured take would be that playing in a field that’s a puddle is going to limit significantly each offense’s ability to move the ball, and we saw the better team prevail, despite the conditions on Sunday. Overreactions and prisoner of the moment comments will always happen when a quarterback throws an interception. Some of Jimmy Garoppolo’s decision making raised eyebrows Week 7, but he won, again. Can he use some help? He may be receiving some very soon, and we’ll talk about that later this morning.
