The San Francisco 49ers will face a backup quarterback Week 8 when the team hosts the Carolina Panthers. Head coach Ron Rivera said Cam Newton will be working with trainers this week and continuing his rehab and might be in and out of practice working on the side. Rivera also said that Kyle Allen would get his fifth start of the season. Carolina is coming off a bye week, so they’ve had time to prepare for the Niners suffocating defense.
Allen lit it up against the vaunted defenses in Arizona and Tampa Bay but struggled against the Texans and the Jaguars. Those AFC South teams aren’t on the same level of the 49ers defense. Allen has completed 65.6 percent of his passes, with seven touchdowns and zero interceptions on the season. He has had some lucky bounces, to say the least. Allen’s PFF grade is 63.1. He’s 18th in DYAR, which is one spot below Jimmy Garoppolo.
We’ll get into more matchups later, but Allen looks like the undrafted quarterback he was in 2018 out of Houston when he’s under pressure. His completion percentage is 72.8% when there’s no pressure. That number drops to 43.3% when he’s under pressure. Allen holds the ball, which is great news for the best defensive line in football.
