The 49ers slipped and splashed on Sunday to beat Washington 9-0 on a rain-soaked field. But on Tuesday, they made a much bigger splash than any on Sunday by trading for Denver Broncos wideout Emmanuel Sanders. The team gave up a 2020 3rd and 4th round pick in exchange for Sanders and a 2020 5th round pick. Sanders instantly comes in as their top receiver and they get him in the building before they head into the hardest part of their schedule.

In making a move for Sanders, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan have made it clear that they are aiming to make a deep run in the playoffs. At 6-0, they have a great shot at making the playoffs, but the offense was lacking a truly reliable receiving option other than TE George Kittle. They could have stood pat, but this move shows that they want to take advantage of the great position they’re in right now. The NFC West division is up for grabs and they needed to make moves to keep their superiority over the Rams and Seahawks. The trade is a great counter to the Rams’ trade for Jalen Ramsey . After the Sanders trade, the Seahawks made a move to get Lions’ safety Quandre Diggs to bolster their secondary.

The trade is huge for an offense that lacked a true go-to receiver. So far this season, they have relied on mostly on their running game, but in the harder part of their schedule, they are going to need to throw the ball. Their top receiver in catches is Deebo Samuel with 15 and the top receiver in yards is Marquise Goodwin with 181 yards. George Kittle has double those numbers this season. Sanders comes in with 30 catches for 367 yards and 2 TDs. He becomes the 49ers’ top red-zone target and his experience should benefit the rest of the receiver group, who are all young. This move is a win now move and with the NFC being wide open, they now have a key piece that could keep them at the top of the pile.

The 49ers waived Garrison Sanborn to welcome back their 1st choice long snapper Kyle Nelson. The kicking game has been subpar this season and hopefully having Kyle back will stabilize it. It used to be a strength of the team and they will need to get back to that level when games get tighter down the stretch and in the playoffs.
