I was wondering what number newly acquired receiver Emmanuel Sanders would wear for the San Francisco 49ers. The majority of numbers that were available were taken. Sanders couldn’t wear No. 10 because it’s occupied by another player that plays a slightly more important position. The 49ers announced on Wednesday that Sanders will wear No. 17, previously worn by third-round draft pick Jalen Hurd. Is this another scenario like Jordan Matthews and Trent Taylor where there was money involved? I’d imagine so. Hurd will wear No. 14 once he returns from the IR.
Here are two quotes from general manager John Lynch and CB Richard Sherman on Hurd:
“Emmanuel is a passionate football player whose toughness and competitive nature have helped him become a dynamic playmaker in this league,” general manager John Lynch said Tuesday via a statement issued by the 49ers. “He possesses a number of qualities, on and off the field, that we value in our players. His familiarity in a similar offensive system will allow for a quick transition. We are excited to add Emmanuel to our roster and look forward to seeing him positively impact our team.”
Here is Sherman:
“I think it sends a message that our front office is committed to this season and they understand, they have a sense of urgency. Not a sense of urgency in terms of the hot seat, but they want this season to be special. It started off special, but they want to do everything they can to make sure we put our best foot forward.
Man, he’s incredibly dynamic. I think he’s going to be great in our offense. Obviously, Kyle does a great job of using speed and explosiveness and him coming from a similar system to ours, it will make this transition pretty seamless and easy. I’m sure Kyle is licking his chops on integrating him in.”
