The San Francisco 49ers released their injury report for Friday, and Marquise Goodwin popped up again. Kyle Shanahan said he’s unsure if Goodwin will be available for the Panthers game on Sunday. If the game was played on Friday, Shanahan said Goodwin wouldn’t suit up. The veteran receiver has been excused for a personal matter.
Shanahan implied that more bad personal news had hit Goodwin, noting that Goodwin been through an inordinate amount of tragedies in his three seasons with the 49ers.
There is a rumor circulating twitter that the Niners are shopping Goodwin, and that’s why he’s not practicing. Separately, NFL Insider Adam Caplan said this about Dante Pettis:
“I’m not saying they’re shopping him, but he’s a chess piece they could put into a trade. It wouldn’t surprise me if Dante Pettis is traded on Tuesday, I’ll leave you with that.”
I thought the point of acquiring Sanders was to not only improve on offense but because the 49ers lacked depth, they could count on at the position. Why would they look to deal Goodwin or a player that is a year and a half into his career?
The 49ers worked out a punter on Friday. Mitch Wishnowsky bust.
49ers worked out punter Ryan Anderson— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) October 25, 2019
Not so fast. Anderson is a left-footed punter. Carolina’s punter Michael Palardy is a lefty. That’s a team taking its preparation to the next level. The ball spins “backward” when a lefty kicks it. Richie James catching punts in practice from Wishnowsky wouldn’t help him at all.
Here is the injury report:
OUT-FB Kyle Juszczyk (knee), T Mike McGlinchey (knee), CB Ahkello Witherspoon (foot)
DOUBTFUL-T Joe Staley (fibula)
QUESTIONABLE-WR Marquise Goodwin (not injury related), RB Raheem Mostert (knee), TE Levine Toilolo (groin)
No D.J. Jones or Deebo Samuel listed, which means the Niners will get two key contributors back.
Toilolo has a groin injury, and Shanahan said if the game were played on Friday, Toilolo wouldn’t play. The hope is the next day, and a half will allow Toilolo to get the treatment he needs to suit up. Toilolo has been giving Justin Skule and Daniel Brunskill help. Shanahan said there’s nobody on the roster that can fill in for Toilolo.
I’m happy the team isn’t rushing Staley back. Staley hasn’t been ruled out officially, but Shanahan said he would need to be good enough to make it through two games in five days if Staley would suit up Sunday. That doesn’t sound like Staley will play.
Here are the only Panthers that are ruled out:
QB Cam Newton (foot)
Edge rusher Christian Miller (ankle)
Offensive tackle Greg Little (concussion)
