Kyle Shanahan met with the media to give a couple of updates on injuries. Earlier on Thursday, the San Francisco 49ers announced they’re placing Jalen Hurd and Jason Verrett on injured reserve. Shanahan said that those two need rest for their injuries. He also said both are candidates to return to the active roster this season. It was a knee injury for Verrett. Shanahan talked about Hurd’s injury. “The pain’s still there. We’ve got to give him a month to get better.”
Dee Ford didn’t practice today as he’s still nursing a knee injury. Ford may not practice Friday, either. The plan is for him to test it on Saturday, and hopefully be able to play Monday Night.
Tevin Coleman did return to practice. Coleman’s status remains up in the air, as the 49ers will turn around and play the Rams on Sunday. That short week may keep Coleman out, though Shanahan said Coleman was “100% and ready to go.”
Jimmie Ward is returning from broken finger and surgery. Ward is the wild-card, Kyle Shanahan said, because he can help at any position in the defensive backfield. Shanahan mentioned Ward would try to play defensive line if he could. That’s his mentality.
Shanahan confirmed the re-signing of WR Jordan Matthews as well. Citing that Matthews was extremely close to making the team to start the season. He knew Matthews would be “the next guy up” when the team placed Hurd on the IR.
The team is headed out to practice shortly.
