Punterville State of the Punter: Week 8

New, comments

Mitch Wishnowsky will play along and adjust his tackling style.

Mayor of Punterville here.

Citizens, we’ve had ups and downs here at Punterville, but that is what happens in the construction of every great city. As our hero Mitch Wishnowsky continues to etch his Australian awesomeness into legend, we must take note of the good and the bad.

Today, we look at neither. We look at the godlike.

Here’s a Mitch Wishnowsky kickoff. It’s nothing big. That is until the Panthers returner does something questionable and tries to outrun the 49ers return team. Then THIS happens:

This made everyone hold their breath. No, not for the hit. That poor Panther returner is fine. No, it was because Wishnowsky got slapped with an unnecessary roughness penalty for lowering the head. If that were targeting, the 49ers would have lost the punter.

Now being without the punter would not be ideal. Especially when it’s early in the second quarter, and there’s still a bit of a game to be made. Then again, when you think about it, you’d be without the punter because he flattened some returner on his kickoff. I don’t know about you, but I’d love that risk to talk about how Wishnowsky got booted from the game. That’s a tale that ranks up there with other 49ers stories. It might not be on the level of The Catch trilogy, but it’s definitely up there.

Wishnowsky is a sport about it, though. Per Matt Maiocco, he mentioned he had to change his tackling style.

“I’m going to have to adjust, for sure,” Wishnowsky said. “That’s the first time where I’ve been in that situation he has nowhere to go. I feel like I didn’t have too much of an opportunity to do anything else. I’ll have to figure something out.”

Style or not, the sheer determination and grit are why we have a city erected in his name, ladies and gentlemen. Before I go to our citizen poll, I have some advice:

Don’t [site-decorum] with Mitch Wishnowsky.

Citizens, please let me know the state of Punterville:
