Re-predicting the 49ers season

New, comments

After a 4-0 start, we ask for a do-over.

Richard Sherman says we need to stand by what we said, stand by to the end.

We say, we believed in the 49ers all along, but we still want a do-over. We never threw dirt on this team, and we obviously are not going to start now. That said, we’d like a mulligan for some of these games.

Some people misfired on their predictions for the San Francisco 49ers’ 2019 season. This is the internet, a part of the digital age; we can always change things. Well, except that video, which when Pat retweeted a reference to it, it’s nearing 1,000 likes.

But, we all can screw up. That’s why we’re going to reassess the schedule for the 49ers. Pat and Kyle both here will look at the remaining 12 games. You can read Kyle’s initial predictions here, and Pat’s here.

Kyle

Week 6: @ Los Angeles Rams

What I said before: Loss - Goff’s Home/road splits

What I say now: Loss - I still think the 49ers lose this one, though the defensive line will keep it closer than I initially thought.

Week 7: @ Washington

What I said before: Win - Just what the doctor ordered, a rookie QB

What I say now: Win - Just what the doctor ordered, Bill Callahan.

Week 8: vs. Carolina Panthers -

What I said before: Win - The Panthers are the ultimate Jekyll and Hyde team, and they are even coming off of a bye week. I still don’t trust them on the road.

What I say now: Win - Christian McCaffrey is the MVP at this point, but whether it’s Kyle Allen or Cam Newton, the pressure will lead to mistakes, and that means points for the 49ers.

Week 9: @ Arizona Cardinals -

What I said before: Win - In a primetime spot, you know Kliff Kingsbury is going to pull out all of the tricks. Arizona is coming off two early eastern time zone games. They’re exhausted.

What I say now: Win - I think this will be one of those weird divisional games where the underdog keeps it close, but a costly turnover from Kyler Murray costs Arizona a victory.

Week 10: vs. Seattle Seahawks -

What I said before: Loss - After building some momentum, the 49ers fall flat on their face in a pivotal divisional game.

What I say now: Loss - This will be the first game where missing Kyle Juszczyk shows up. Thankfully, this is the last game he misses.

Week 11: vs. Arizona Cardinals -

What I said before: Win - The good news is the Niners respond well and sweep a fun, yet undisciplined Cardinals team.

What I say now: Win - The Cardinals get blown out on the road.

Week 12: vs. Green Bay Packers -

What I said before: Loss - This is one of those all-world Aaron Rodgers games where there’s just nothing you can do. He’s on.

What I say now: Loss - I think it’s the Packers defense, and their speed, specifically, that give the 49ers problems on offense.

Week 13: @ Baltimore Ravens -

What I said before: Loss - The 49ers have never scored more than six points against the Ravens.

What I say now: Win - The Niners might score 36 on this Baltimore defense. They’re terrible.

Week 14: @ New Orleans Saints -

What I said before: Loss - The rollercoaster season continues. This game is full of explosive plays, but Drew Brees gets the last laugh.

What I say now: Loss - This will be a possible playoff preview, but Alvin Kamara is too much at home and win a close one in a defensive struggle. Think obnoxiously low scoring, like the Saints/Cowboys Sunday night game.

Week 15: vs. Atlanta Falcons -

What I said before: Win - I don’t think the Falcons are going to be very good

What I say now: Win - Their defense is somehow worse than expected.

Week 16: vs. Los Angeles Rams -

What I said before: Loss - This would be the spot to beat the Rams, but I still think they’ll be too much here.

What I say now: Win - I think this goes back to Goff on the road and at home. This could be a statement game for the 49ers, where they beat the Rams and clinch a division title.

Week 17: @ Seattle Seahawks -

What I said before: Win - The 49ers miss out on the playoffs after an inconsistent season, but they prevent the Seahawks from making the playoffs.

What I say now: Loss - The Niners have nothing to play for, and many of the starters sit this one out. Meanwhile, Seahawks fans still find a way to talk crap.

Original Final Record: 8-8

Revised Final record: 11-5

Pat

Week 6: @ Los Angeles Rams

What I said before: LOSS - 49ers will be in it until a field goal at the end.

What I say now: LOSS - I wholeheartedly believe the 49ers can win this game, and I won’t be surprised if they do. Objectively, they have to take a loss somewhere, and the Rams’ backs are against the wall. If the 49ers win, it’s a blowout. If they win, they aren’t losing anything for awhile.

Week 7: @ Washington

What I said before: LOSS - The 10:00 A.M. start time claims itself a victim.

What I say now: WIN - Washington is the NFC’s Miami Dolphins. They stink.

Week 8: vs. Carolina Panthers

What I said before: WIN - I do feel the 49ers are the better team here at this point.

What I say now: WIN - Looks like I was right on this one back in April.

Week 9: @ Arizona Cardinals -

What I said before: LOSS - Until proven otherwise, Larry Fitzgerald has to beat the 49ers with 10 seconds left every year.

What I say now: WIN - 10 seconds is all it takes for the Cardinals to fall 21-0 against good teams.

Week 10: vs. Seattle Seahawks

What I said before: WIN - I don’t see how they beat the 49ers.

What I say now: WIN - I don’t see how they beat the 49ers.

Week 11: vs. Arizona Cardinals

What I said before: WIN - So help me God if they lose in San Francisco.

What I say now: WIN - So help me God if they narrowly win in San Francisco

Week 12: vs. Green Bay Packers

What I said before: LOSS Another game that ends with some stupid offsides/roughing calls that lets Aaron Rodgers keep the ball and take the win.

What I say now: LOSS - The 49ers defense has yet to take on an elite quarterback. We’ll know more as time goes on, but the Packers have that elite quarterback. Please NFL, flex this game into Sunday Night. If all goes well, Seattle will be out of the division race by now and that Sunday night game is moot.

Week 13: @ Baltimore Ravens

What I said before: LOSS - Hope you’re ready to hear comparisons to the Super Bowl, because half the telecast is going to be on that...

What I say now: WIN - ... and how the 49ers have avenged that loss. Years later, and after already beating the Ravens in 2015

Week 14: @ New Orleans Saints -

What I said before: LOSS - I don’t see any way how they win. This is going to get ugly.

What I say now: LOSS - But not by what I thought before. This won’t be an ugly game, but they are in New Orleans, and the Saints are the obvious Super Bowl pick.

Week 15: vs. Atlanta Falcons -

What I said before: WIN - 49ers play hard for Kyle Shanahan against his former team.

What I say now: WIN - The Falcons show through actions they miss their former offensive coordinator.

Week 16: vs. Los Angeles Rams -

What I said before: WIN - I put the 49ers on a brutal three-game losing streak where they wake up, power-up, and give the Rams a last-minute loss.

What I say now: WIN - The Rams are not winning in San Francisco.

Week 17: @ Seattle Seahawks

What I said before: - WIN - I said to start 2019 it’d be by two touchdowns. 49ers, don’t let me down.

What I say now: WIN - Any idiot can guess a thousand times and be right once.

Original Final Record: 9-7

Revised Final record: 13-3

There are times to go full homer. This is one of those times.
