49ers try out seven players in the wake of Juszczyk’s injury

Will the team go with a run-blocking threat, an athlete, or stick with what’s on the roster?

Per Field Yates, the 49ers tried out just about every available fullback with Kyle Juszczyk expected to miss over a month.

Here are the names:

George Aston

Tommy Bohanon

Michael Burton

Derrick Coleman

Tre Madden

Ricky Ortiz

Aaron Ripkowski

Aston was with the Broncos during the preseason before being cut. He is an undrafted rookie out of Pittsburgh that was known as an outstanding blocker coming out of college. I don’t think this is a good indicator of being a good receiver, but Aston did catch 45 passes and score eight touchdowns in three years. His preseason run-blocking grade from PFF was 47.6 in 50 run-blocking snaps.

Tommy Bohanon has been around the NFL since 2013 when he was drafted in the seventh round by the Jets. Bohanon started 16 games during the last two seasons with the Jaguars.

Going through these names, it’ll be interesting to see which player the 49ers choose. They can roll with a veteran like Bohanan, or a blocking threat like Aston. If the name Tre Madden sounds familiar, he was a running back at USC. He had 138 carries in 2013 for 703 yards. It was back in 2016, but Madden ran a 4.6 40-yard dash and also played linebacker.

Good luck replacing Juszczyk, though. You can’t replace his attention to detail when it comes to blocking. I don’t think Shanahan plans to, either. We’ll likely see a name signed this week because Ross Dwelley isn’t the answer.
