The 49ers took only one week to retake their spot at the top of the NFC from Seattle. The 49ers went into New Orleans and came out 48-46 winners against the Saints in a battle of potential NFC Championship contenders. Jimmy Garoppolo and Drew Brees both threw for 349 yards in the offensive shootout. Jimmy threw for 4 touchdowns and Drew threw 5 touchdowns. The 49ers were the last team with the ball and were able to drive down to kick the game winning field goal. This game could be a preview of the NFC Championship Game, but the win gives the 49ers that game at home if the season ended today.
Throughout the season, critics have cited Jimmy Garoppolo as the weak link of the team. Because of the great defense and running game, people would point at Jimmy because the team didn’t need him to have huge games to win. But on Sunday, the team needed every throw to run out winners. The defense couldn’t slow Drew Brees down and Jimmy needed to match Drew throw for throw. And that is exactly what he did. Critics were weary of the 49ers offering the contract they did to Jimmy after just 5 games in 2017, but this season has shown that the 49ers made the right move.
Jimmy is on pace to throw for almost 4,000 yards this season and he would join Steve Young and Jeff Garcia as the only 49er quarterbacks to reach that mark. He currently has 25 passing touchdowns and he only trails MVP candidates Lamar Jackson, Russell Wilson, and strangely enough, Jameis Winston in that category. All he has done this season is help lead the team to wins and to the top of the NFC. The time is coming for Jimmy to show what he can do in the playoffs and it’s the playoffs where 49er quarterbacks have made themselves into legends. If he can lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl and win, he’ll be revered next to Joe Montana and Steve Young.
