San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Wednesday afternoon that defensive tackle D.J. Jones could miss the rest of the season with a significant ankle injury. Shanahan said he’s “pretty worried” and that Jones has a “significant” ankle injury. This was a different ankle injury than the previous injury for Street. I don’t think this is a hot take, but Jones is the most underrated player on the defensive line, and there is nobody that can do what he does. He’s a dominant run defender that you’re not going to move. He takes on double teams and is a big reason why Fred Warner can make all those tackles near the line of scrimmage. I love watching Jones play. What a tough loss. Sheldon Day, who played well against New Orleans, will take his place in the starting lineup. Expect Solomon Thomas to be in the mix as well.
Shanahan also said DE Kentavius Street has a chance to play this week against the Falcons. With Dee Ford down, I wonder if Street will play on the edge or inside. When the 49ers opened up his practice window last week, the head coach said Street was more of an inside guy that can play on the outside in a pinch. He compared his usage to Thomas. That’ll be something to keep an eye on if Street is active on Sunday. The Falcons would be the perfect team to throw Street out there to get live reps and see what he has. It would be great if Street can contribute anywhere between 15-25 snaps a game. Shanahan said “that’s why Street would be up this week” when talking about
No huge surprises, but these are the players that won’t practice Wednesday:
DT D.J. Jones
DE Dee Ford
CB Richard Sherman
SS Jaquiski Tartt
DL Jullian Taylor
CB K’Waun Williams
