The 49ers returned to the practice field for their final practice on Friday. The loss of defensive tackle Jullian Taylor will hurt, as he’s the only defensive lineman over 300 pounds, and Seattle relies heavily on jumbo packages with six offensive linemen. Kyle Shanahan confirmed Taylor tore his ACL and will go on IR in a couple of weeks. His replacement will be undrafted rookie free agent Kevin Givens, who is undersized, but very athletic and quick. Givens has a high motor and might be a better counter than Taylor, as his quickness inside could present problems in the backfield for the Seahawks.
Givens played 112 snaps for the 49ers defense this preseason and showed flashes. He recorded two run stops and seven total pressures. This was supposed to be a “redshirt” season for Givens, but he gets the call up in what is the biggest game of the season for the team. I’d expect Givens to play anywhere from 10-20 snaps, depending on how he holds up and what plays he makes. Givens won this week’s “scout team player of the week,” so this is an even bigger reward for the rookie. I’m excited to see him play, even if it is in limited action.
As for the rest of the team, Jaquiski Tartt and Deebo Samuel remained in blue, non-contact jerseys. Tartt is listed as doubtful, so Marcell Harris will get another start. The only other players that didn’t practice Friday were Dee Ford and Jullian Taylor. We’ll update the injury report once the team releases it.
