This week’s episode focuses on how the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson and offensive coordinator Greg Roman, are using the same exact scheme Roman and Jim Harbaugh utilized from 2012-2014 with Colin Kaepernick. I dug up an old playbook from the 2014 49ers, and found the same plays used today in 2019. Roman brought back the zone read concepts that made Kaepernick so successful, and Jackson’s 977 yards rushing is about to eclipse Michael Vicks’ single season record (1039).
Something crazy found while doing research for this episode: In 2012, Jim Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Greg Roman dominated the NFL with a zone read scheme, taking the 49ers to the Super Bowl where they would lose to John Harbaugh’s Ravens. Also in 2012, Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan used a similar scheme to aid Robert Griffin III to becoming the rookie of the year. Now in 2019, Greg Roman is using the same exact scheme with the Ravens, where Jim Harbaugh’s brother John is still the head coach, RG3 is the backup quarterback and they just beat Kyle Shanahan’s 49ers.
