Who is the best available player if Nick Bosa goes No. 1?

The 49ers biggest need is edge rusher, but is Josh Allen the best player available?

The San Francisco 49ers came close to having their pick of anybody in the 2019 NFL Draft. Nick Mullens unexpected emergence as a solid backup option is important, but if Ohio State edge rusher Nick Bosa goes No. 1 and turns out to be better than his brother, as some suspect is possible, those close late season wins over the Broncos and Seahawks will have some wondering whether or not it was worth it.

But that is settled business, and the 49ers are picking No. 2 whether we like it or not. The Cardinals could still draft Quinnen Williams, trade the pick, or go for a surprise and draft Kyler Murray. Bosa still seems a likely pick at No. 1, but crazier things have happened.

Mock drafts continue to have the 49ers selecting Kentucky edge rusher Josh Allen second in the draft. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar put together his latest NFL mock draft, and he mocked Allen to the 49ers once again. In this week’s mock he offered up a handful of offseason needs for each team to go along with the pick. For the 49ers, he included edge rusher, safety, wide receiver, and cornerback.

It’s clear the 49ers need to fix the secondary this offseason. Ahkello Thompson is a solid cornerback, and Richard Sherman is still holding up. But after them, San Francisco is thin at cornerback, and the team need a consistent safety presence. All of that is why the 49ers finished last in Pro Football Focus’ secondary rankings this season.

Unfortunately, there just isn’t value with the second pick in the defensive backfield. There is up front on defense, though. Despite taking Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, and Solomon Thomasin recent years, San Francisco still needs pass rush help. That’s where Allen comes in. He can play on the strong side and rush the edge.

These positions offer the 49ers some value with the pick, but they have to figure out the proper mix of best player available and need. Allen is regularly mocked to the 49ers, but Alabama defensive tackle Quinnen Williams is mixed in as well. Occasionally LSU cornerback Greedy Williams is mocked there, although significantly less than early in the offseason.

Who is that next best option for the 49ers at No. 2 if Bosa is off the board? If you can’t see the poll below, click here.
