The franchise window opens up today, and the 49ers are expected to tag kicker Robbie Gould. Just two things: I hope that this is a placeholder to get a deal done and I also hope Gould isn’t going to be disgruntled being kept away from his family. There were rumors that negotiations weren’t going so well and now the 49ers are slapping the franchise tag on him.
The business side of the NFL can be cruel sometimes. Gould’s family is in Chicago and he’s working out here in the Bay Area. It’s weird because while the 49ers want to win it might be at the cost of one man’s livelihood. This isn’t about another NFL team tampering with him (though the Chicago Bears had to be loving everything until around noon today), this is just a guy who was wanting to be near his wife and kids. So hopefully this is a placeholder to get a multi-year deal worked out that Gould wants so maybe he’s not staying in hotels the whole time.
Or maybe Gould doesn’t mind any of this. If that’s the case, well then...
