Wes Welker has been reportedly hired by the 49ers. Wes, who spent last season with the Houston Texans, is expected to be the receivers coach, but his exact title has not been confirmed. He is the 4th coaching hire for the 49ers since the season ended. He joins Joe Woods, Kris Kocurek, and Shane Day. The team still has yet to hire anyone for the vacant assistant offensive line and the head trainer positions.
Wes was an excellent slot receiver who became Tom Brady’s favorite receiver for many seasons in New England. If he is the receiver coach, players like Dante Pettis and Trent Taylor could benefit the most from his coaching. Trent was drafted as a Wes Welker-type player since they are about the same size and run good routes. Dante was drafted for his playmaking abilities and he has already shown the ability to be great at separating right off the line of scrimmage, which Wes excelled at.
Wes was an offensive assistant for the last 2 seasons with the Texans. He played in the NFL for 12 seasons, but really came into the spotlight with the New England Patriots. In six seasons in New England, he went to the Super Bowl twice, but lost both times to the New York Giants. In 2014, he went back to the Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos, but lost to the Seattle Seahawks. He brings a wealth of experience to the 49ers and will be an important part of the passing offense.
