The 49ers are in the market for a corner. That has been made clear. The team reportedly showed interest in now Colts CB Pierre Desir. The team also hosted former Chargers CB Jason Verrett on Wednesday.
With that in mind, Ian Rapoport reported that the Minnesota Vikings have received calls from teams interested in trading for former first-round CB Trae Waynes, sources say. His fifth-year option just became fully guaranteed, so Minnesota won’t cut him. But there is interest. It’ll be interesting to see the type of offers that are going for Waynes. The 26-year old will have a cap hit just over $9 million for 2019.
On top of the cap space, you’ll likely have to give up a day two pick. Whether that’s this year or next year is up for debate. Many expect Waynes could be traded for a third round pick this year. Even the most faithful Trae Waynes truthers would only go high as a second round. So a relatively high cap hit, for a one year deal, that you’ll have to extend in order to make the trade worth it.
Type of player you’re getting
Waynes is largely known by the Vikings faithful for being very aggressive against the run. In a positive way. Waynes is a good tackler. Waynes also quietly had a better season last year than the “big named” corner on the team, Xaiver Rhodes. Waynes had a higher success rate and limited receivers to fewer yards after the catch. Waynes had a 55% success rate in 2018. You know who else had the same success rate? Jalen Ramsey.
Of course he’s not the player Ramsey is, but that just gives you an idea of how productive he was in coverage last year. The tricky thing with corners is no other position varies statistically from year-to-year. That’s the risk you take, whether it’s free agency or via trade. If you make a move for Waynes, you better be sure he checks all the boxes for you. Character, talent, financial risk.
Would you give up a day two pick for Waynes at a $9 million cap hit for 2019?
