Bosa vs QW and dline groupings (im on the QW team now)

I am not a common poster, but after watching some videos and reading up a bit i have decided that i am curious enough to put a question into the mix. What are the various lineups people believe we could assort out of our current dline personnel with the additions of Bosa or QW in the starting base and nickel lineups? The point being to evaluate who fits into our lineups easiest together. I will add as a note that I am beginning to be swayed by the QW camp a bit.

So one point I want to discuss before the debate over the 2 defensive player is that I actually do not believe that we will trade down in the first round. It would be nice to grab more picks but I do not believe that we want to pass up on a top star player to trade down in this draft. Regardless of the possible benefit of gaining more top players with plenty potential to fill important roles on this roster, I believe that we will stay put and take a star player at #2 pick. I do not think we will get a good enough offer for Haskins and I think that is ok.

Now, moving forward assuming we stay at #2, I also think that AZ picks Murray. I think it will happen honestly, and for this exercise work with me. The 9ers could easily have the Bosa vs QW choice forced into their lap. My ultimate answer to this dilemma is that we will end up taking a star player, so life is great. But, I also agree with the QW camp about choosing the BPA because we can, now that we have traded for and signed Ford to a large contract. We signed him to play LEO and i believe he will. He will very rarely be asked to drop into coverage and this is why we signed him.

It seems like our defense is changing a bit to incorporate a wider, speedier, edge rusher on base downs. I don't know how the run defense will change, but i believe they have a new scheme for that this year to incorporate more of a wide 9 edge rusher with Ford on all downs.

I think that Bosa is more of an edge rusher and therefore has a more valuable position, however, I believe QW to just be the more versatile, stronger. more athletic, and more versatile lineman. I think Bosa completely fits into our starting lineup with Ford, Buckner and Bosa, but I also think QW fits with these players too. I believe that the argument for DL redundancy is overrated for 2 reasons. The first being that good DL can be versatile too. For example, I believe that Bucker could play some more edge DL if we sign QW. And I also believe that our linebackers could do some great things with a line that included Armstead, QW, Buckner, and Ford. Perhaps this is why we signed Kwon.

I personally do not think that Solly is good and I also do not think he is worth trading. I think that Solly is only worth trading if you simply believe that he will receive so little snaps that he is not worth keeping on the roster. For this reason I believe that you keep Armstead and DJ jones opposed to Solly and trade him for a 5th-6th hopefully.

Now with crafting a dline in mind for 3 players - QW, Buckner, Ford - and then secondly Armstead/ whoever the other strong end/ run stuffing player is they can have a nickel rusher replace Armstead in some passing downs and therefore have an incredibly formidable pass rush.

The other 3 players we could have in mind for the Dline is obviously Bosa, Ford, Buckner. WIth this trio we may have more implied passrush. However with this crew we seem to waste either Bosa or Ford at a run stopping position - the big end or the SAM. they will both be great in nickel, especially with Bosa, but the base defense seems worse to me. I do not see the purpose of changing the big end from Armstead to Bosa as much now, because we signed Ford.

To me, saying that Bosa is the preferred pick, is almost a knock on Ford. Since the FO just drafted Ford, I do not see us wanting to prevent him from getting his share at his best role in this defense. I think he and Bosa could work great in Nickel together with Buckner and Armstead or Solly in the middle, but I think we can find better arrangements with QW in both base and nickel, partly because he is simply a better DL prospect.

One aspect of my evaluation here is that I believe QW can play 3 positions on our defense easily. I think he can play base 1T, 3T, strong end, while also being able to play any interior edge rusher from the nickel extraordinarily well. I believe that the final assessment is what sets QW apart from anybody else. He can rush from the interior in nickel downs extraordinarily well. He could play many positions in our base defense and fit well with any grouping that we currently have without having his pass rushing skills wasted in my opinion. I also believe that this season and in the future after Armstead and other dline players leave, then we could play Buckner on the strong end in base, and the edge rush in nickel, and he will still excel without any talent being wasted. If anything Buckner is freed up to become our Michael Bennet/mobile piece, while QW is freed up to play an Aaron Donald/Chris jones role to the best of his abilities. I think he and Buckner and a great edge rusher like Ford can all work extremely well together in the passrush department. In my mind this crew fits well with Armstead/ another decent nickel edge rusher. I even think that a nickel edge rush of Armstead, QW, Buck, Ford is great, however perhaps slightly bested by Buck, QW, Arm, Ford, seeing as Buck has more bend than Armstead.

Now if Bosa is the pick, then I belleve the base lineup would be Bosa, Armstead, Buck, Ford, which has perhaps better passrush on paper, but I think Bosa would be wasted on the strong side getting double teamed in passrushing situations. I also think Ford is completely wasted and will flop as a SAM. So therefore the pro of the Bosa addition has to pay off in the nickel. The nickel formation would have Bosa and Ford on the edges and Buck and Armstead/Solly on the interior. On paper this looks like more rush because the edges look better and more sackworthy, but the formation may be less successful. If we can get top level rush from QW and Buck in the inside and Ford on oneside we may only need the type of pressure that Armstead provides on one side. In other words it will be easy enough to find a satisfactory finisher to pair with the trio of QW, Buck, Ford in some nickel downs, than it would be to find a stud player to play along with Bosa, Buck, Ford on all downs. Part of my thinking is that on base downs I believe we value the run stopping ability of the strong side end more than we value the pass rush of that position as we are happy to let that player be double teamed.

We clearly envisioned a specific versatile role for Solly when we drafted him, and even though our D may change up a bit I believe we still have a similar role in mind. I think that now Buckner fits that mold the best, especially if we get a new interior player. I think we have experimented with Buck on the edge in the past for a reason and now we will be utilizing him in that role more often if we draft QW because we think he is a generational talent moreso than Bosa.

Now to end this ramble. How do you see our dline with these 2 players fitting in in base and nickel. I believe that we truly want Ford at Leo opposed to a linebacker. I also think that if we draft QW we may draft another passrusher in this draft, while if we draft Bosa i bet we focus on other positions (just for that fact to be considered however you want.)
