Stock report for pass rush prospects after NFL Combine

The 49ers got a first-hand look at some of the NFL Draft’s top pass rushers on Sunday at the Combine. Let’s take a look at how their performance impacted their stock.

It’s a good year for the San Francisco 49ers to need a pass rusher. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan got a first-hand look at the defensive lineman and linebackers as the two groups took the field on Sunday at the NFL Combine. Let’s take a look at the draft’s top pass rushers and how their performance today impacted their stock.

Nick Bosa: Stock unchanged

Bosa is still the draft’s top prospect after the combine. The 6’3, 266-pound defensive end put on a solid performance, running the 40-yard dash in 4.79 seconds with a respectable 1.65-second 10-yard spit. His 7.1-second three-cone was third among the draft’s top rushers on this list. With rumors swirling around the Arizona Cardinals selecting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray first-overall, the 49ers have a legitimate chance of landing Bosa at pick No. 2.

Josh Allen: Stock unchanged

Like Bosa, Allen’s stock remains unchanged after his performance in Indianapolis. The 6’4, 262-pound Kentucky linebacker ran the 40-yard dash in 4.63 seconds. His 7.15 three-cone would put him fourth on this list. Allen has long been the popular pick for the 49ers in mock drafts with Bosa going first-overall. If Murray to the Cardinals continues to pick up steam, it’s likely we’ll see Bosa supplant Allen for the most common pick headed to San Francisco as we inch closer to April’s NFL Draft.

Brian Burns: Stock up

The Florida State pass rusher put on an impressive showing on Sunday. Burns (6-4, 249) ran a 4.53 40-yard dash, second only behind Mississippi State’s Montez Sweat. His 1.61 10-yard split and 7.01 three-cone were also second only to Sweat on this list. Burns was considered underweight throughout the season and many draft analysts wondered if he would test well with the added weight. It’s safe to say he exceeded expectations and is a strong target for the 49ers if a trade tempts them out of the No. 2 spot.

Montez Sweat: Stock way up

No defensive player has made more of an impact at the combine than Sweat. The Mississippi state pass rusher shattered the 40-yard dash record for defensive lineman with a ridiculous time of 4.41 seconds. Sweat’s 1.50-second 10-yard split also led the group and his 7-second three-cone was the best on this list. Sweat likely boosted his draft stop into the top half of the first round, and after spending the Senior Bowl with the 49ers, he’s a likely target if the 49ers trade out of No. 2 overall.

Jachai Polite: Stock way down

The Combine couldn’t have gone worse for Polite. He made the wrong kind of headlines on Saturday after complaining that teams were overly critical of his college film during meetings — including the 49ers. On Sunday, Polite (6-2, 258) ran a disappointing 4.84 40-yard dash and was noticeably out of shape. He injured his hamstring and was unable to compete in any of the other drills throughout the day. Bleacher Report’s Matt Miller reported hearing from scouts that Polite interviewed poorly and they weren’t buying the injury. Polite’s draft stock may drop him out of the first round entirely and he may no longer be a target for the 49ers.
