So ... Where Do We Go From Here?

On Monday Fooch posted an article entitled "Full offseason tracker of 49ers roster moves" which summarizes roster activity from now through the start of the 2019 season in September. At this point in time almost all of the transaction categories can be summarized as "TBD". In retirement, for fun, and as a "Pseudo Niners GM" junkie I maintain a perpetual analysis of such stuff. For most of us this is "dead week" ... the Combine is over but official free agency tampering doesn't start until next week ... meaning, except for many ridiculous rumors, absolute boredom. Just for giggles, let me fill in Fooch's blanks with my desired outcomes over the next six months.

With the roster build-up to 90 players for Training Camp and then the cut-down to the Final-53 there are going to be a lot of additions and then departures. To avoid all of that "noise" I'm going to simply include those changes that will have an impact on my projected Final-53. Here goes:

2019 Salary Cap

$ 188.2 million ... a 6.2% increase over the 2018 Cap.

Niners' 2019 Salary Cap Capacity ... As of March 5, 2019

$ 67,684,622 ... before reflecting the effect of proposed free agency additions, deletions, other cuts (dead money) and draftee additions.

Proposed 49ers Free Agency Additions ... No Comp Pick Impact

TE Jesse James (Pittsburgh)

P Austin Rehkow (several NFL clubs but now with the Salt Lake Stallions of the AAF)

Proposed 49ers Free Agency Additions ... Potential Comp Pick Impact (Preferred signing at each position listed first)

LB Anthony Barr (Minnesota) or Shaquil Barrett (Denver)

FS Earl Thomas (Seattle) or LaMarcus Joyner (LA Rams)

CB Pierre Desir (Indianapolis) or Rashaan Melvin (Oakland)

Note: I would love to also sign a free agent edge-rusher like Trey Flowers (New England) or Dante Fowler (LA Rams) but we simply don't have enough cap room to afford that; my assumption is that Barr or Barrett will essentially serve that function in Nickel and Dime situations.

None ... too costly in (a) already limited draft capital, and (b) impact on cap capacity.

So, what is the approximate financial effect of all of those proposed moves? Using my best guess for what the free agents will likely sign for (on an average-per-year cap-effect basis), here's what it would look like roughly:

Cap Space as of March 5, 2019 (per OverTheCap) $ 67,684,622
Add: Presently-identified Dead Money (per OTC) $ 1,838,175 (1)
Add: Cap Savings from players released or cut (per OTC) $ 5,150,000 (2)
Gross Cap Space before any Dead Money or additions $ 75,672,797
Estimated APY cos for six free agents (including Person) $ 36,000,000
Dead Money for all proposed players released or cut $ 16,500,000 (3)
Provision for 2019 draft class $ 10,050,000
Total Commitments against Cap for roster changes $ 62,550,000
Remaining Cap Space after all proposed transactions $ 13,122,797
(1) Included in Dead Money estimate below.
(2) Cap savings from Garcon, Smith and Mitchell contracts.
(3) Garcon ($7,2M),Smith ($4.2M), Foster ($2.4M) and Mitchell ($1.5M)
are the big contributors.
