I know free agency is no supermarket shopping spree but the 49ers need to be very aggressive in signing Earl Thomas and Jordan Hicks. I usually don’t like to see us spending a lot of money on one player in free agency but our deep safety play last season was an abomination. We owe it to our young secondary players to know they have someone backing them up that they can count on. I don’t think I need to even say much more about Thomas. Most people on here already know how valuable he would be.
You might ask why Jordan Hicks? It is because, not only is he a good inside linebacker but, he has experience under Jim Schwartz playing linebacker in the wide nine. Lining our edge rushers so wide is going to create a lot of work for the linebackers and it will be very helpful to have one that has already been so successful in that kind of system. Hicks is as much of the key to making the wide nine scheme work as Earl Thomas is to the cover three.
Chris Kocurek learned the wide nine from Jim Schwartz in Detroit before Schwartz moved on to Buffalo and then to Philadelphia where his defense was very instrumental in their Super Bowl run two years ago. I have a lot of faith in Kocurek to teach a similar system to our defensive line but it would also be nice to have a player next to Warner that really knows it from the linebackers position.
